What is Cannabidiol?

A total of 400 different chemical compounds can be found within Cannabis, from these 61 are cannabinoids.CBD is one of these cannabinoids and accounts for 41% of the plant’s extract. It is important to note that Cannabidiol works on the endogenous cannabinoid receptors that are found within the human body. The endocannabinoid system is in charge of regulating many different psychological processes within the human body such as: ability to recall, appetite, pain management and mood balance. While Cannabis has been used as a form of medicine for countless years, it was only in 1940 that CBD was first isolated. Interestingly, two different people isolated CBD from two different variants of Cannabis. Mexican marijuana was the source for Roger Adams, while Indian charis was for Alexander Todd. It wasn’t until the mid to late 60’s that the structure and relative stereochemistry of CBD was established by Raphael Mechoulam.

Cannabidiol Usage

The market for those that enjoy CBD versus THC is quite different, due to the fact that CBD products do not have any of the desired hallucinogenic effects associated with THC. Over the past 5 years CBD products have grown enormously in popularity. Due to its ability to help stabilise the mind and its extremely low toxicity, it is seen as a go-to for many people suffering from low to medium levels of anxiety and depression. Cannabidiol is also used topically for pain relief and skin related benefits.

Cannabidiol Tolerance

Little evidence has surfaced showing that tolerance is built towards Cannabidiol. The opposite in fact has been reported, many consumers find that they need less of the product as time goes on. Fundamentally this is most likely due to the unique way that CBD interacts with the human body.

Legality:

UK - In 2016 Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) deemed Cannabidiol a medicine that required standard licensing requirements.

Switzerland - Due to producing no psychoactive effects, it is not subject to the Narcotics Act in Switzerland.

USA - Cannabidiol is a schedule I substance under US law due to its affiliation with Cannabis. FDA-approve drugs including CBD are listed as a schedule V substance.
